Creating beautiful artwork in coloured pencil

Here's a little bit about me and my work.

I have lived in beautiful Winchester in Hampshire, in the south of the UK for 30 years. It's a fantastic little city, with the South Downs on the doorstep and a wonderful blend of urban and rural areas.  I grew up on the south coast, in Gosport, and went to Portsmouth Art College (as it was called then) where I studied Technical Illustration.

I didn't remain the the art industry though; opting instead to pay the mortgage and other bills with a regular wage.  I don't regret my career, but I do wish I had continued to draw in my spare time, as now, 30 years on, I feel as if I missed a lot of art possibilities.  In 2017 the time was right to start a new chapter of my life. It wasn't going to be art related at the time, but life is unpredictable and plans had to change.  It wasn't long after that I began sketching again.

I have seriously and completely fallen back in love with art and creativity. I regularly explore new mediums, try my hand at different styles, different subjects. I feel I have a lot of catching up to do!  These days I can be found almost exclusively at my desk doing something art related.  Whether its a commission, a personal piece, a practice painting or an experiment, I can't seem to get enough.

Commissioned pet portraits make up the bulk of my work.  These are highly detailed realistic portraits that I copy from photographs.  But I do enjoy finding my own interesting and colourful subjects too.

Amazingly, I have seen some success in the few competitions I have entered.  I won best in show in December 2019 for my Koi Carp drawing from the UK Coloured Pencil Society, and in 2020 won the SAA Artist of the Year Competition, Landscape & Woodland category, which was the biggest surprise and honour.

In 2021 I was invited to become a brand ambassador for Derwent. Their support means that I can continue my artistic journey and use quality products as I learn. In return, I create content and artwork for them with the products I am using.

Though I do not currently record my art process for tutorials, I am looking into this, and will be working towards producing some video content later this year.

You can browse my gallery to see completed work, or my 'in progress' page where you can see and read about the work on my board.
