HI! I'M HELEN
Here's a little bit about me.
I live in the beautiful city of Winchester in Hampshire, in the south of the UK, and have been here for 30 years. Its a fantastic little city, with the South Downs on the doorstep and a wonderful blend of urban and rural areas. I grew up on the south coast, in Gosport, and went to Portsmouth Art College (as it was called then) where I studied Technical Illustration.
I didn't remain the the art industry though; opting instead to pay the mortgage and other bills with a regular wage. I don't regret my career, but I do wish I had continued to draw in my spare time, as now, 30 years on, I feel as if I have missed a lot of art possibilities.
I enjoyed my career in Local Government very much, but in 2017 the time was right to start a new chapter. It wasn't going to be art related at the time, but life threw me a bunch of lemons and plans had to change. It wasn't long after that I began sketching again.
Since then I have seriously, and completely fallen back in love with art. I regularly explore new mediums, try my hand at different styles, different subjects. I have a lot of catching up to do!
These days I can be found almost exclusively at my desk drawing. Whether its a commission, a personal piece, a practice piece or an experiment, I can't seem to get enough.
I have learned a lot in the last 3 years, and have seen some success in competion too. Always a huge boost and they push me to create more varied and interesting pieces. I won best in show in December 2019 for my Koi Carp drawing from the UK Coloured Pencil Society, and earlier this year won the SAA Artist of the Year Competition, Landscape & Woodland category.
Though I work in a lot of mediums, my passion is coloured pencil. I really enjoy getting stuck into the detail and creating realistic artworks with a hint of a painters touch.
